Beautiful cannot begin to describe the space at Asbury Hall at The Church. From its soaring steeple, to its Medina sandstone Gothic Revival facade, to its Booth & Reister stained glass windows, The Church will be an inspiring backdrop to learn from the leading instructors of Tribal belly dance. The venue is perfect for our festival. There are beautiful hardwood floors for dancers' tender feet and there is a state of the art geothermal heating and cooling system. We are looking to expand our troupe membership,

Are you “Hip Savvy”?

We are looking for new members who can compliment our current troupe both in dance and personality. With our goals to become a professional troupe we also require our members to commit to regular weekly practices and rehearsals. To audition for us please be an advance-level dancer with public performance experience, preferred.

We have been performing for over three years in and around the Portland Metro area.

Our dance influences include roots in American Tribal Styles, Filipino, Celtic, Indian, Hip Hop, Folk, Hawaiian, and anything else that inspires us! We are open to a wide variety of music. Last Saturday Unmata and many others screened the DVD in Sacramento and many said that the Joker piece was their favorite! Dancing with Fire
Lorraine will cover mechanics of twirling torches with dance, a technique that can be applied to spinning poi, as well as safe fire handling. There will be no actual fire during this session and there is no experience necessary to take this class. What students will need for the class: Please bring practice poi (long tube socks with hacky sacs will do). A yoga mat, foot covers and knee pads are always recommended for TF workshops. All levels welcome.

We are headlining the Showcase at the Fez!

Fri.:

Tribal Feat Combos
Cynthia and Lorraine will share their signature combinations. This workshop will include stretching and strengthening drills for warm up, lead by Cynthia. You are welcome to incorporate these sassy moves into your unique performance. What students will need for the class: Bring your brain and body. A yoga mat, foot covers and knee pads are always recommended for TF workshops. Intermediate/advanced dancers.

Sun.:

Dance Shop Fusion
Cynthia and Lorraine will introduce movements inspired by Modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop (sorry, no Tap). This workshop will include stretching and strengthening drills for warm up, lead by Cynthia. You are welcome to add these moves into your tribal fusion improv and choreographic vocabulary. These combinations will be adaptable to fit your own stylizations and needs. Shimmy-a-thon 2006 planning is underway- mark your calendars for Sept 23rd. Last year's event raised over $16K for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and we are hoping to raise $20k this year.

For those of you who participated, donated or came to the event last year, thank you for your support and we hope we can count on you again this year! More proof that we're aliens

Courage posted an interesting article on the Urban Tribal tribe. It talks about how professional dancers possess certain genes. Here's an excerpt that I thought might apply to Tribal Feat:

"One of the identified genes is a transporter of serotonin, a brain transmitter that contributes to spiritual experience. The second is a receptor of the hormone vasopressin, which many studies suggest modulates social communication and human bonding."

Lorraine, what did the mother ship say about vasopressin receptors? I think I remember something about how they forgot to issue them to us before we came to earth.

i saw kathleen last night and played her our boom boom video. she looks great! it was so cute she got up and started dancing our moves to show that she could have performed with us. aw well... you never really know how an event is going to turn out, especially when it's out of state. the event was low stress, no drama, and fun as usual. we love domba and their studio (which cyn plans to steal) and of course, missed Q + bun.

Electric Vardo started with DJ Amar, DJ Sep, Ultra Gypsy, & DJ Dragonfly, bringing in the amazing talents of Frederique & Belly Groove, Cheb i Sabbah, Janaka and Dhamaal, Dhol Rhythms Bhangra dance troupe, Turbo Tabla, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, Tabla Rasa, Kitundu, & many others.

After months running as a primary performer, it seemed best that Frederique join as a promoter. As of October, Frederique came on as an official promoter and joined the Electric Vardo Collective/Family, and together with DJ Sep and Amar, brought in a spectacular performance with Boom Boom Bollywood, Joined by Ultra Gypsy's Jill Parker, Vicki Virk of Dhol Rhythms, and DJ Layla from Portland Oregon.

In November we were joined by Sila and the Afrofunk Experience for a benefit for Kashmir.

Why is BD the best exercise?

Please forgive me if you see this cross-posted, I just wanted to reach as many of my friends as possible. *_*

Dear Tribe friends,

I'm doing a paper on why bellydance is a preferred form of exercise so I am hoping you will lend me your opinions on the subject. A couple of questions:

How has BD affected your health?
Did other things change (physically) because of BD? (like sleeping patterns, eating habits, etc....)
How do you think your attitude about exercise in general has changed because of BD?
What are the negatives concerning bellydance as an exercise?
Have you ever committed to any other form of exercise with the same level as you have with bellydance?
What additional forms of exercise do you do?
Is BD your only exercise?

These are just a sample of where I'm going with the paper that I also have to give as a persuasive speech. Any thoughts, comments or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Bellydance "Hurricane Relief"

Spread the word, Thursday Sept 15th. 8PM get all your friends and family out to Stratos.

Nick (the owner) really wanted to do something for the Hurricane victims, so he has graciously offered to donate a percentage of the sales that evening to the Red Cross.

So we are going to have an impromptu Harem night.

Every Thursday is they have drink specials (margaritas 2.00) and appetizers are 4.00.

So spread the word!!!! Lets watch some dancing and raise money for a good cause.

these are left over music cds from our trip to hungary (the ones that were opened so the hungarian dancers could listen to certain albums before buying the sealed copies). all earnings will go into the tribal feat fund and cyn will split it between the dancers that traveled to hungary. i know it's a little late, but some of us are still trying to pay off our plane tickets! i promised to list items to contribute to the fund so these are just some of them ;-).

Hurricane Relief Efforts

Hey all! I'm coordinating several different groups to gather donations (for humans and animals) for the relief effort of Hurricane Katrina. All donations will be going through the Red Cross, and the SPCA. As usual, cash is the preferred method, but I understand how some people feel about giving cash. So, here are oher ideas:

The SPCA in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are setting up a temporary shelter between Biloxi and New Orleans to house all the rescued animals. 300 dogs and cats have been transferred to the Houston shelters. They are in desperate need of food, bedding, and money. People who have fled with their animals and are entering into shelters can't take their animals. The SPCA is sponsoring a Pet Haven trying to find homes to foster these animals. Please call 972-562-7297, ext 123

I'm collecting ANYTHNG anyone has to donate. A few places are still taking things such as clothes, diapers, formula, food, water, etc. If anyone is going to Pepsi Kid Around, I'll be volunteering there Saturday and Sunday. If you take any items leave them at the volunteer station for me. Just make sure a staff (All our shirts say staff or volunteer) member knows it's for me. If you can't get out, I do have a truck, I will travel.

I'm safe, Heather can vouch for me, I'm not trying to case anyone's homes. :D I have just been so moved by everything I see, so heartbroken by everyone's loss, and feel a need to DO something. If you wan tmore info, or want to schedule a pick-up/drop off, send me a message I'll be happy to give you my cell number, or chat further.

Don't Fret - No split.... Just new name

Ok so if you read the last post and have questions... here is an explanation.

Liquid Hips is strickly due to a geographical change. Cyn had to move to CA for her job.

So when we get the chance we will be performing together as much as possible.

All is good and we performed last night for the first time as Liquid Hips. Though it sounded different... and some guy thought we said "Lick My Hips" - we quickly corrected him... we did a good job, and they loved us!

Hello Burning People,

I am super excited to be DJing for you at the Hookadome’s Fire Spin Jam, one of Burningman’s most thrilling ethnic dance events. The fun will begin on Wednesday night, sometime after 9:00 PM. Clan Destino kicks off the night with aerial, belly dance and fire performances, and then the Fire Spin Jam begins. We will dance until kerosene runs out.... Haha!

Because this is a Hookadome outdoor dance night, I plan to spin a kick-ass set. However, to give you expressive dancers a variety of tempos to work with, the music will be punctuated with funky midtempo dance music that will make your hips get slinky and reckless.

I will be playing a melodic set of deep, bass-heavy breaks house and funk of Middle Eastern, Asian and African origin. I will also be mixing it up with Bellydance and Bhangra music you will love.

To all you African Dancers, Tribal Bellydancers and Indian Temple Dancers, you don't need to have fire tools. There will be lots of great music that will appeal to you.

The Hookadome is located at 3:30 & Esplanade.

For those of you following what we have been up to, you know that Cyn has been gone. She is back that's right you heard me right... back in town.
And what better way to welcome her back than to throw her back into performing.

So without further ado, please join us at Stratos Thursday 8PM for Harem night. There are two options for this evening $30.00 gets you in the door, 4 course meal, and reserved seating. Or 10.00 to get in. We will be performing in the second half of this show.

Friday is Cafe Istanbul if you can't make Thursday. I don't know the details on this one - other than we are also performing in the second half.

Saturday is our normal time at Stratos... 11PM

I'll be passing through Dallas on Friday/Saturday to visit a friend of my fiance's on the way to fiance's family in Oklahoma. Can you guys give me some ideas on good fabric stores to visit in the Dallas area? Specifically I'm looking for Chinese brocade for a current project, but there's always room for more fabric. Just looking in the phonebook, there seem to be some sari retailers in Richardson, anyone been to them?

My hubby is going away! :(

Dearest Friends and Family,

Just wanted to let you know that my sweet husband, Delvos, has accepted a contract for CSA, Inc for a job as a Haz/Mat Safety Instructor in Kuwait. We are not sure yet of his exact departure date, but it will be within the next 20 days. He will be at Camp Doha in Kuwait City for a one year contract. He will be home for Linda's graduation in May 2006 for a couple of weeks. He is really excited about his new job and the opportunity to get back into the Haz/Mat Safety Training field again.

We are going to have an open house/BBQ on Sunday, July 24th, from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm here at the house, email me for the addy and phone number.

We will have food, margaritas and beer. If you want to bring something else that's ok, but mostly we just want to see your smiling faces :). Drop me an RSVP so I will know how many people to expect to feed.

Hello Friends,

We invite all dancers who are curious about PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) www.puredance.org, to join PURE NYC facilitators, Kaeshi Chai and Sarah Johansson Locke in Los Angeles on Sunday July 24th, for the first PURE workshop to take place on the west coast.

PURE has been spreading steadily across the US since it started last year. Both Kaeshi and Sarah feel honored that they will have the opportunity to share this project with fellow dancers from California.

WHAT IS PURE?
PURE is community of dancers and musicians who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace.

WHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP COVER?
The PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) workshop will emphasize working in a group, using your peripheral vision, tuning into each other and breathing together. Movements PURE uses are inspired from ancient Sacred Circle dances, Tribal and Cabaret bellydance, Flamenco, Indian, Folk dance, Yoga and Qi Gong Meditation.

REQUIREMENTS
PURE is open to all dancers who are willing to try something different and work as a team. Ideally, it is designed for bellydancers who already have a foundation in basic technique, however, dancers with training from other disciplines are also welcome.

There are no limits on age, size, shape, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic class or sexual orientation except for a desire to offer your dance for the healing and growth to the Los Angeles Community.

TIME:

1.30-2.00pm: Sign-in
2.00pm-7.00pm: PURE Workshop (includes half an hour break)

FEE: $60

Iqaat Studios, 3515 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90065

DIRECTIONS:
From the S.F Valley - take the 101 South to the 134 East - then get on the 2 South and exit Verdugo. At the bottom of the offramp make a Left, go under the overpass and make a Right on to Verdugo. Go 4 blocks off the exit - Verdugo will turn into Eagle Rock Blvd. The studio is located on the right hand side.

From the Westside - Take the 10 East to the 5 North - then take the 2 North- exit Verdugo and make a Right. Studio will be on the right hand side about 3 blocks after the exit.

WHO ARE THE INSTRUCTORS?
Kaeshi Chai is based in New York city. She co-founded "PURE" with Darshan from "Gypsy Caravan" in Portland and "Bellyqueen" dance company with Amar Gamal. She has toured extensively with the Bellydance Superstars throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Kaeshi is very excited to share PURE with others as a vehicle to create community and healing. Sarah Johansson Locke is an internationally known performer, choreographer, and teacher with ten years of experience in Tribal and Fusion dance styles. As a former member of "Gypsy Caravan", she performed at numerous theaters and festivals throughout the United States. I, LaRa of Devadasi, am putting together a 2006 (Non-Profit) Tribal Fusion Bellydance Calendar (Large, 12-month, wall-size) in order to raise money for Doctors Without Borders
( www.doctorswithoutborders.org ). Although Tribal Fusion Bellydancers are a large part of the target audience, it is projected that the consumer audience will be much larger. New Location (and Teacher) for Beg I and II class

Ok so if you have been paying attention you know that Cynthia has a job that has her traveling quite a bit. While we are no Cynthia by any means, Katy and I are going to teach her classes while she is gone.

The beginning classes will be held at the Cliff Nelson Rec Center in Arlington.

Great Trip!

We had a wonderful time! I think the highlight for me was going to the mineral bath after teaching the workshop. I was so sore from all the performing and teaching...and then we went to this beautiful mineral bath located in an art nouveau style edifice, with flowers all around. Heather has pictures, which I'm sure she'll post.

The countryside was beautiful, and so was the city. There was lots of lush greenery all around, even inside the city. Katy and I stayed just outside of Budapest in a little village called Csomor, with a really fun family of artists. Their home was gorgeous! I wanted to stay there forever.

We met some wonderful people, saw some beautiful sites, and ate some delicious foods!

The plans for the second annual 3rd Coast Tribal event are already being finalized - and what an incredible lineup we have! This event, which will take place Friday through Sunday, January 6-8th in Fort Worth will feature Sharon Kihara (of the Indigo and the Belly Dance Superstars), Cammi Vance (of Gypsy Caravan and the Dalia Carella Dance Collective) as well as Tribal Feat and Urban Gypsy for over 14 hours of dance instruction, lots of tribal shopping, and a Saturday evening show! Maybe a silly question, but classes?

Unfortunately, I was not able to make the first beginner class last week, and understand that there will be no classes this week. Can I, as a newbie come to the class next week or should I wait until August?

On another note, I am VERY excited to have the chance to take lessons with you guys. I have been enamored of tribal fusion for a while, but didn't think anyone offered it, besides the limited lessons given at my current studio.
