Hello fellow bellydancers!

I'll be passing through Dallas on Friday/Saturday to visit a friend of my fiance's on the way to fiance's family in Oklahoma. Can you guys give me some ideas on good fabric stores to visit in the Dallas area? Specifically I'm looking for Chinese brocade for a current project, but there's always room for more fabric. Just looking in the phonebook, there seem to be some sari retailers in Richardson, anyone been to them?

PS: are you guys performing Friday night?

Cheers,
Natalie (n.o.madic tribal student)

Do you know what area you'll be in? Off 183 and Carl Rd (kind of Irving) is a sari place I just LOVE. It's called 'Chinese Boutique' and their prices are pretty good. I bought roughly 7 yards of precut material for about $18. Racks of cholis and material that's $1, lots of fun reasonably priced jewelry, furniture, AND luggage. There's also TONS of places on Harry Hines off I35. Just start at one end and keep your eyes peeled for anything that has the word 'fabric' in it. And don't be afraid to U turn in traffic. Everyone else does it too. ;)

Perth Street (off of Harry Hines) is supposed to be the fabric mecca of the D/FW area. I have never been there but have heard many stories of wonderful costuming adventures in the fabric district....Donna, can you help me with more specifics?

OH OH OH OH!! A thread that is tailored for me, woohoo! For chinese brocade, here is where you HAVE to go, ummm, what the heck is the name of it? :) Just kidding, hehe. It is:

      Best Fabrics
      10901 Harry Hines Blvd
      Dallas TX 75220
      214-350-2583

It is on the corner of Harry Hines and Perth st, thats why we locals just call it the fabric dist on Perth st. There are about 12teen more fabric stores around there, but go to Best First, you will find what you are looking for there. If I have time, I go to Current which is down on the opposite corner and sometimes I get lucky. If I'm hardcoring it, I'll check out all the others, but I usually don't find anything good. But, you never know, it's like a treasure hunt to me ;).

As for the Sari shoppe on Carl Rd and 183 in Irving, I used to love that place, great deals. But lately (last 4 months), they haven't had any good sales on stuff I like to use. Very disappointing actually, since I've been a customer for years. I did however get a fabulous bedroom set for about $60 a couple months ago. Woulda paid $300+ for it in Foleys, it is VERY nice.

I actually didn't even go in there on my way back from Perth last week....I know, shocking huh??? =)

Woops forgot to mention, since these are warehouse businesses, they are 9a-5p for the most part. There is a sign at Best saying they are no open on Sundays, but the others aren't, so I don't go unless I need something right away.

And Katy, you have NEVER been to Perth St??? OMG, I'm such a baaaad mom *hangs her head in shame*

I've gotten a lot of really neat fabric on perth street...Not that I've done anything with it, but I've bought it. All the tassles and beads that place right there on the corner sells...*swoon* But some of it can be pricey. At that place on 183 and carl, the best deals seem to be on precut fabric. Maybe it's just me?

That, and a few people could use some tips on hygiene...I've had to flee a few enclosed places... :( I KNOW it's not nice, but people need to be warned!

Oh my God! I just wanted to let you guys know that I found Best Fabrics and wanted to cry because it was so perfect. I found fabric in the upholstery section that was awesomely perfect for the project I'm working on, and I bounced up and down for the next week because I had such a great fabric high. Thanks so much! I'm hoping I get up for the Kammi Liddle workshop, so maybe I'll see you guys there!

        love,
        nat

          • Fabric FRUSTRATION

            Hey y'all,

I drove around Irving today looking for Chinese Boutique - does anyone have more specific directions than "off of 183 and Carl"? Is it north of 183 on Carl or south? On the service road? I couldn't find the address in the phone book and I felt dumb driving around burning expensive, Middle Eastern-import fuel.

It is called Asia Boutique, it is off 183 and Carl...however, it is VERY sneaky...the Sign on the post that you can see above the highway reads, "Fabric World".

It sits on the North side of 183. Hope that gets you there better.
